The decision was taken to rebuild the spans of the bridge as an arch bridge, and also to install a road deck above the railway level as a new route across the strait to reduce the volume of traffic crossing the narrow Menai Suspension Bridge.

The bridge suffered a massive fire, which severely compromised the integrity of the steel components. The bridge stood almost in as built condition for 120 years, until the tar which was used to cover the inside of the bridge to prevent corrosion was set alight by mischevious youths in 1970. The tubular box girder was a rare design, designed by the great Robert Stephenson. This was a pioneer, being one of the biggest box girder bridges ever built at the time, with two spans of 140m. In 1850, one of the greatest bridges the world had ever seen opened over the Menai Strait in North Wales, connecting Anglesey to the Mainland.
